Opium addiction has recently emerged as a new and challenging health care issue; born out of the abject poverty and hopelessness in which many Afghans find themselves. Hospitals are reporting an increasing number of opium addicted babies being born. In some rural areas, opium is often given when medicines are scarce or nonexistent. There are very few drug rehabilitation centers to treat the growing population of addicts.
