This lesson introduces you to religion in Afghanistan.  Afghans take their religion very seriously.  You will learn about the majority and minority religions and denominations and how religious devotion is expressed.  Islam is the official religion and you should have a basic understanding of this faith. Virtually all Afghans are Muslims. The majority are Sunni Muslims.  The minority or Shi’a Muslims live predominantly in the Central Afghan provinces, but they also coexist with Sunnis in major cities.  You will learn how core beliefs, rites and rituals influence daily activities of the people of Afghanistan.  Religious freedom, as well as tolerance and inter-faith relations will also be discussed.  At the end of this lesson, you should be able to complete the following learning objectives.
