British rule has left a legacy on sports in Pakistan. Sports commonly played are cricket, field hockey, squash, wresting, polo, soccer, rugby and tennis. Field hockey and polo are the national sports, while cricket is the most popular and followed by the largest percentage of the population. More recently badminton, basketball, gymnastics, and martial arts have become popular. Equestrianism and mountaineering are popular sports among the upper class.
