Designing a Quality Online Course

The Academic Technology Center offers a five-week fully online course to faculty who will be developing an online course. This purpose of this course is to facilitate your course design and development process. The course facilitators will work collaboratively with you to help you transform your course to an online format based on the Quality Matters Rubric Standards, as well as the Principles for Universal Design for Learning.

Upon completion of your coursework and development of your course, you are encouraged to submit your course for a Quality Matters course review. To learn more about Quality Matters, explore the Course Design Section of the website .

Designing a Quality Online Course is for all instructors who will be developing an online course. The skills covered include:

• Designing a consistent and effective quality framework for your online course
• Designing multiple assessment strategies to effectively measure stated learning objectives
• Integrating sufficiently comprehensive instructional materials aligned to learning objectives
• Integrating a variety of interaction and engagement strategies aligned to course and module-level objectives
• Employing course navigation and technology to ensure access to course materials and resources
• Facilitating student access to institutional services essential to student success
• Incorporating Universal Design principles to ensure course components are accessible to all students

This purpose of this course is to facilitate your course design and development process. The course facilitators will work collaboratively with you to help you translate what you would normally do in a traditional classroom, to an appropriate online mode or perhaps even find a new approach to accomplishing the same goals.
