Defining Mobile Instruction
Mobile devices and technologies such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), smartphones or other ultra-portable mobile devices have become pervasive in our society and offer the potential of untethering students from more conventional e-Learning systems. Three different, for-credit certificates are currently offered using mobile devices at UWF.
PDA delivery. Courses delivered completely using a Personal Digital Assistant (or other mobile device) in conjunction with print-based materials may be the best delivery model for students unable to consistently access the Internet. For a variety of reasons, military personnel often require this additional flexibility and mobility. Therefore, current PDA instruction at UWF targets military personnel in a set of two certificates (Human Performance Technology graduate certificate and Technology Support Systems undergraduate certificate).
Ultra-portable mobile computer delivery. Specially tailored to our military students, the undergraduate Arabic Language and Culture certificate is designed for maximum flexibility using a small ultra-portable mobile computer as the primary device for accessing instructional content. Students can complete large amounts of each course without access to the Internet but still need to identify some Internet time to complete practice sessions with the instructor and to hand in major assignments.
