Throughout a course, look at student test and assignment results to determine whether course objectives are being met. Consider the reactions and suggestions from students to determine what problems may exist with the course materials.
You may also ask your students to participate in one or two formative evaluations of the course design and materials. The information provided by the students can be used to revise the course materials to better meet learning goals and objectives.
Use summative evaluations at the end of the course to measure whether the course objectives were met. Post-tests and/or final exams can be used as summative evaluations. Again, end-of-course student feedback surveys are good way to determine student reactions toward the overall course.
Generally, online courses should revised at least every three years. Other reasons for revision might be a textbook that has gone out of print or changes made in the course content by the academic department. The amount of revision ¹
