What is Elluminate Live!
Elluminate defines Elluminate Live! in the following manner:
- Elluminate Live! is built specifically for live, multi-media, many-to many collaboration.
- Whether you have two students-or two hundred-Elluminate Live! enables world-class communication, collaboration, and education that transforms teaching and learning
We, in the Academic Technology Center, along with Instructional Technology Services , could not agree more. Elluminate Live! (that's not a misprint, Elluminate Live! is the way the product name is written) will transform your approach to online teaching and learning and student collaboration.
No special software is needed for you OR your students.
There is a significant issue that you should consider when planning to use Elluminate Live!:
- Elluminate Live! is a synchronous tool.
- Therefore, your students, to attend your Elluminate Live! sessions, must be available at a specific time.
- This, to some degree, violates the purpose of online courses. Online courses and their resources are intended to be available to students 24/7, at times of the student's choosing.
- However, this issue can be overcome in several ways:
- The sessions should not be mandatory, unless this requirement has been specified in the syllabus that is made available to the student BEFORE they sign up for the class.
- If at all possible, the sessions should be offered more than once during the week and at different times to attempt to accommodate the student's schedule.
- The sessions can be recorded and made available to the students for viewing at ANY time.
Moderators: To get familiar with Elluminate Live! we recommend this outstanding introductory recording produced by Elluminate.
- The recording was created in Elluminate and lasts approximately 19 minutes.
- Viewing this recording will also demonstrate the process your students will encounter as they sign into an Elluminate Live! session.
- Everything is automatic.
- Your browser may require you to authorize the downloading of the JAVA files necessary to run Elluminate Live!
- So, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy.
Now that you are familiar with Elluminate Live! schedule an Elluminate Live! session by referring to this file (It is recommended that you print this file for future reference.).
Once Elluminate has created the Guest and Chair links you are ready to practice. Here is a "Best Practice" suggestion for quickly learning to use Elluminate Live!
- It is best to practice with two computers (preferably a laptop and a desktop).
- Set up the desktop computer with the "Chair" link.
- NOTE: the Chair link contains "YOUR" name. Therefore, you can not give this link to other participants to enable them to sign in as Chairs (Moderators).
- If it is necessary to give a Participant (Guest) moderator privileges, you can do so during the session by "right-clicking" in their name and selecting the "Give Moderator Privileges" option.
- Set up the other computer (laptop) with the "Guest" link.
- Now you can practice the many options available in Elluminate Live! on your desktop computer and see how these options are implemented for the student on the other (laptop) computer.
- This is a very effective option. Many have tried it and it works.
Now you are ready to practice the options you choose to implement during your Elluminate Live! session.
RECOMMENDATION: In the beginning, keep it simple, AND
Practice first.
Follow the links below to the many training guides available through Elluminate:
