Enhancing a Supportive and Inclusive Culture for Recruiting, Retaining and Advancing Women Faculty in STEM

	UWF Faculty ADVANCE: The University of West Florida (UWF) is working to build a program for adapting the best practices for Enhancing a Supportive and Inclusive Culture for Recruiting, Retaining, and Advancing Women Faculty in STEM--a university-wide, systemic, and sustainable approach for advancing faculty women in STEM fields, with special attention to women of color and leadership positions. UWF Faculty ADVANCE is supported by the National Science Foundation. The project will achieve its goals at two levels: the individual (positive psychological capital) the organizational (social and ecological system)		Dr. Erica Jordan Research Interests: Parent-child relationship quality, discipline and punishment, family dynamics Dr. Eman El-Sheikh Research Interests: Artificial intelligence, machine learning, intelligent tutoring systems, interactive learning environments, agents, knowledge-based systems, service-oriented architectures, STEM education Dr. Pamela Vaughan Research Interests: Photochemical reactivity of contaminants such as Triclosan (anti-microbial agent) and petroleum products in natural waters Dr. Florentina Tone Research Interests: Numerical analysis of fluid mechanics equations, namely the Navier-Stokes equations, and, in particular, the stability and error analysis of different numerical schemes Dr. Jocelyn Evans Research Interests: American politics, legislative behavior, representation theory, women and politics, social meaning of civic architecture Dr. Valerie Morganson Research Interests: Work-life balance, customer sexual harassment, workplace coping, telework, and the underrepresentation of women in STEM fields Dr. Karen Molek Research Interests: Rebuilding a MALDI time-of-flight-mass spectrometer and synthesizing transition metal oxide nanopowders Dr. Bhuvana Ramachandran Research Interests: Electrical machine design, application of soft computing techniques in power system operation and control, application of multi agent systems to smart grid energy market and distributed control for power and energy management Dr. Ashley Stripling Research Interests: Geropsychology with emphasis on clinical applications, promotion of healthy aging, understanding of subjective aging/ageism, and combating ageist stereotypes Dr. Toby Daly-Engel Research Interests: Using genetic techniques to investigate the evolution of cryptic reproductive behavior in fishes, especially sharks Dr. Kristina Killgrove Research Interests: Bioarchaeology; classical archaeology; stable isotope analysis; transnational migration, diaspora, and urbanism in antiquity Dr. Jane Caffrey Research Interests: Biological and chemical processes in estuaries and coastal environments; estuarine nutrient biogeochemistry; and cycles of oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus Dr. Ashley Geng Research Interests: Power management of the smart grid; Cooperative control of multi-agent Systems Dr. Joann Curtin Research Interests: Forensic anthropology and bioarchaeology
	Why the NSF ADVANCE Program? More women than ever are obtaining Ph. D's in science, however women continue to be significantly underrespresented in almost all science and engineering academic positions. The full participation of women in academic STEM careers is important given the pivotal roles that faculty members and administrative leadership have as intellectual, professional, personal, and organizational role models that shape the expectations of many prospective scientists and engineers. UWF Scholars Week 2013 Scholars Week 2013 began Tuesday, April 23 and ended Friday, April 26. This event combined various conferences held on campus into a week long symposium. UWF Scholars Week 2013 included a NSF UWF Faculty ADVANCE keynote address, Women's Studies Conference, Society of Women Engineers Symposium, Student Scholars Symposium, and the NSF UWF Faculty ADVANCE Annual Showcase. We are excited to announce the launch of our expert hotline through the UWF Faculty ADVANCE mentoring program! The expert hotline is a tool that faculty members can use to seek advice and information about service, teaching, or other specific topics at UWF. Expert Hotline Link Visiting Scholar Update: One of our ADVANCE Scholars, Dr. Karen Molek, Department of Chemistry hosted Dr. Kimberley Frederick, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Skidmore College. She was on campus April 18th and 19th. As part of her Visiting Scholar activities, Dr. Frederick met informally with ADVANCE Scholars on Thursday, April 18 and gave a public lecture the same day. The lecture was entitled "Lab on a Chip: using Plastic Diagnostic Chips to Improve Health Care". Thanks to Dr. Frederick for meeting with Scholars and presenting her research. Thank you to Dr. Molek for hosting Dr. Frederick Another one of our ADVANCE Scholars, Dr. Jane Caffrey, Center for Environmental Diagnostics and Bioremediation, invited Dr. Mary Silver, emeritus professor of biological oceanography at UCSC to visit UWF. As part of her Visiting Scholar activities, Dr. Silver held a coffee hour with the ADVANCE Scholars as well as gave a public lecture Thank you to everyone who attended these events.
