Striving to get the most out of his college experience, Nam Phan knows what it takes to achieve excellence in his life’s pursuits. Reciting an old proverb the 20-year-old says, “Let your reach exceed your grasp . . . let your aims be high, even though fulfillment may seem impossible.” Phan, a junior majoring in Nursing at the University of West Florida, is living by these words and using his time at UWF to set his future in motion.
“I view UWF as a catalyst for life,” said Phan. “I want to earn my degree as well as grow personally and emerge prepared for the professional world.”
Having lived in Pensacola his entire life, choosing to attend UWF was an easy decision for Phan. Pensacola’s world-class beaches, cultural scene, Southern hospitality and historic charm make it an inviting and friendly city, which Phan considers himself fortunate to be a part of.
“Pensacola has always been my home,” said Phan. “I wasn’t ready to leave, but I still wanted to attend a state university, so UWF was a natural choice.”
Phan says his favorite things about UWF are the location of the campus and its natural setting. Outgoing and enthusiastic, his most memorable experiences while in college have occurred through his involvement in various campus organizations.
“Being involved with Sigma Chi Fraternity, Student Ambassadors and the UWF Sailing Club has helped me to build life-long relationships,” said Phan. “I encourage other students to take full advantage of all UWF has to offer. You can only gain so much from going to class and you will never grow unless you put yourself in new situations.”
While he enjoys participating in campus activities and organizations, Phan has never lost focus of his ultimate goal of earning a nursing degree. He has an innate desire to help people and knows a solid education will be essential when he enters the workforce. As for his future career plans, Phan prefers to keep his eyes on the present.
“Honestly, I don’t know what I’ll be doing 24 hours from now,” laughs Phan. “But, I know there will always be people who need help, and I’m confident that I won’t have any trouble finding employment after earning my degree from UWF.”
