Originally from South Florida, Lakeisha Norris chose to attend the University of West Florida because of its small size and high quality programs in her area of interest. Now a junior majoring in pre-professional biology, Norris is excelling both academically and personally and credits UWF for helping her grow as a person.
“I came to UWF shy, withdrawn and yearning to become a more well-rounded person,” said Norris. “UWF is a great university for those who feel a little unsure of themselves or feel that they may not be ready or suited for college. Through its services, events, professors, staff and over all inviting atmosphere, UWF helped me to become the well-rounded person I always wanted to be.”
Taking advantage of all that UWF has to offer, Norris has immersed herself in campus life, joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, representing UWF through the Student Ambassador Program and working part-time at the campus Starbucks. She says her favorite things about the university are the services and activities available to students.
“UWF provides students with things like help with school work through the learning center, writing lab and math lab, as well as computer advice through ITS and career guidance through the Career Center,” said Norris. “There are also many events that take place on campus that give students the right amount of entertainment and all the free food they could want, while still keeping in mind the importance of scholastics.”
With the primary goals of becoming more independent and excelling both in and out of the classroom, Norris says she wants to enjoy and learn from all of the experiences she has at UWF. So far, managing tight finances, overcoming stress and staying motivated have been her biggest challenges while in college, but she has stayed focused and committed to achieving her ultimate goal of becoming a dentist.
“After I graduate from UWF, I plan on continuing my education and earning my degree in dentistry,” said Norris. “I want to be an orthodontist in the U.S. Air Force and maybe even have my own dental office one day.”
Reflecting on her time at UWF and what it takes to succeed in college, Norris encourages future college students to be open minded, committed and involved. She says, “always remember that to be in college is a privilege, and as such, it should never be taken lightly.”
