Serving as starting goalkeeper for the University of West Florida Women’s Soccer Team, Courtney Jones is gaining an education both on and off the field. Teamwork, leadership, integrity and a strong work ethic are just a few of the traits Jones has garnered as a student-athlete at UWF. Holding the school records for the most wins and most shutouts of any goalkeeper in university history, Jones recently led her team to place second in the NCAA Division II National Soccer Championship.
“There’s a great sense of pride that comes with playing in the national tournament,” said Jones. “As a team, we give our all with each game and work together to achieve an overall goal. It’s inspiring to be surrounded by young woman that are so devoted and determined.”
Crediting UWF with helping her become not only a better soccer player, but also a better person, Jones says she always knew she wanted to play soccer in college and it was Head Coach Joe Bartlinski who sold her on everything UWF has to offer.
“We’ve been so successful because Coach Bartlinski really does know what he’s talking about and he’s a great recruiter,” said Jones. “Our team plays for each other, which goes a long way when you play a team sport; it takes everyone working together to produce results.”
Equally dedicated to her studies as she is to her team, Jones is majoring in Exercise Science and plans to pursue a career either as a physical therapist or orthopedic surgeon. The field was an obvious choice for the athlete, as she has always had an interest in sports, injuries and rehabilitation of injuries. Although time management is sometimes a challenge for Jones who balances school, soccer and friends, she is absolutely committed to maintaining a high grade point average.
“My grades are obviously a reflection of me, but I feel they also reflect upon my team,” said Jones. “I want to gain the respect of my peers and professors throughout my academic career.”
When not in the classroom or on the field, Jones enjoys tie-dying, playing Guitar Hero and participating in other sports with friends. Opportunities to meet new people and get involved in a wide range of campus activities are two of the primary reasons she recommends UWF to prospective college students.
“You honestly can’t go wrong here at UWF,” said Jones. “The class sizes are small enough to provide a more personal relationship with your professors and peers, yet the school size is large enough to really give you the ‘college experience.’”
