Lay volunteer checks eyes of a patient

UWF assistant professor brings sight and hope to El Salvador through Eye Care International

Thousands of lives were changed in just two weeks, thanks to the dedication of eye care professionals and lay volunteers, including Karen Valaitis, Ed.D., assistant professor of clinical practice at the University of West Florida and chair of the board for Eye Care International. As a member of the leadership team, she participated in Eye Care International’s 2025 mission to El Salvador which provided critical eye care services to 2,800 patients, restoring their eyesight and improving their quality of life.

UWF-IHMC Research Team awarded $478,000 Office of Naval Research grant

A University of West Florida-Institute for Human Machine & Cognition research team received a $478,000 grant for the acquisition of advanced robotic platforms and equipment from the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program of the Office of Naval Research. The grant was one of only 64 grants awarded in the nation. Dr. Robert Griffin and Dr. Matt Johnson, who both hold dual appointments with IHMC and UWF through the Intelligent Systems and Robotics program, and Dr. Hakki Erhan Sevil, UWF ISR faculty member, worked together to apply for the funding.

Reubin O’D. Askew Lecture Series kicks off with discussion on American Grand Strategy

The University of West Florida’s Reubin O’D. Askew Department of Government will feature two distinguished scholars for a timely discussion on "Debating American Grand Strategy in the Trump Era" as part of its 2025 Askew Lecture Series. The event will take place on Thursday, March 27, at the Museum of Commerce in downtown Pensacola. A public reception will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by a lecture at 6 p.m. A Q&A session and a book signing will close out the event. This event is free and open to the public.
